LTAD is a framework for developing physical literacy, physical fitness, and competitive ability, using a stage-by-stage approach. The LTAD model recognizes physical literacy is the foundation for:
  • Being active, healthy, and engaged in physical activity for life.
  • Achieving personal best performance at all levels of competition
LTAD provides an optimal development plan for everyone to participate in physical activity. It also ensures that individuals who wish to excel in their sport of choice get the optimal training, competition, and recovery in each stage of their athletic development.

Overall Objectives of LTAD
  • Stages of athlete development are aligned with delivery partners in the sport system. Special Olympics participation can begin at any age and continue for a lifetime.
  • The purpose of this Implementation Plan is to identify how SOO can offer this optimal system and support, from the Active Start to the Train to Compete stages of athlete development as well as the Active for Life stage.
