Key Factor #11: The 10-Year Rule
- It
takes many years of sustained, high-quality training for a talented
athlete to reach elite levels. Because high performance sport for
athletes with an intellectual disability is in its infancy, an
equivalent guideline is not available. But the evidence available
suggests that a comparable level of commitment, time, and quality of
training is required for athletes with an intellectual disability to
reach elite standards.
- Recommendation:
Developing sport skills, sport-specific fitness, and psychological
attributes to compete effectively is a long-term process and programs
should be structured based on the demands of the sport and the level of
athlete fitness.
